Exploring Cornwall: Boat trip to St Mawes

I’m determined to make the most of summer this year so whenever the boyfriend and I have a day together (and it’s not raining!) we’re off exploring! Yesterday we got the bus to Falmouth and the boat over to St Mawes to have a wander around the castle. Our days out are somewhat restricted as they have to be reachable by public transport and it was a nice change to head out on the water.

The boats run across the river every half hour so we grabbed some lunch at Marks and Spencer first. The cafe has amazing views and has had a bit of a makeover since I was last there. I’d love to do something similar in the kitchen but we don’t have enough wall space. Next time we move… I’ve included some photos below but the lighting is a bit rubbish – I need some photography lessons from the boyfriend. Check out the luxury hot chocolate! Mmmm…

It had been a while since I’d been on a boat trip (across Cardiff Bay a good few years ago) and I’m not a big fan of being out of my depth and surrounded by nothing but water. Because it was just a 20 minute journey and I could see land all around me at all times, it was alright! Apparently, on a good day, you can see dolphins but it wasn’t our day. We’re hoping to get the boat all the way down the river to Truro later in the summer and there are loads of local sea safari trips, so there are plenty more opportunities. There were plenty of houses on the water to drool over though.

I think I could be quite happy living in St Mawes. It’s a beautiful place and (seemingly, at this time of year), not a massive tourist trap. There’s not much over there bar a few village shops, a couple of pubs and incredible houses (and the castle – more on that in a bit) so it’s a great place to just be. We’d definitely need a car to live there though – the boat ain’t cheap on the regular!

The castle was pretty awesome. It only cost a few quid to get in and there’s plenty to look at. On a sunny day it’s really nice to just walk around the grounds and explore outside.

Inside was fascinating. The stairs went on forever with different rooms to peruse. I want to live there! It’s huge with high ceilings, big windows and amazing fireplaces. There were a couple of birds flying around inside though. They would have to go.

We made a friend on the boat back too. I think it was because she wanted our ice creams.

We’re hoping to go to Pendennis Castle later in the summer – hopefully the day that we take the boat all the way down the Helford River. Have you been? Got any other favourite castles? When I was younger I hated visiting places like that but now I love it.
